Hwa Sun Kim, b.1975
Born in Korea, Hwa-Sun embarked upon her BFA at Hong-Ik University in Seoul in 1994 and is currently pursuing her MFA also at Hong-Ik University. She has participated in several group shows, including the Hong- Ik University Exhibition (Dah-Bal) in 2000, and a two-man exhibition, entitled Geu Rih Go, Barabodah (And, Looking) with So-yun Kim in Seoul in August, 2001. Kirn's oeuvre deals with society's ironic breakdown of communication in today's information age and suggests that even though our mode of communication has altered drastically, man is still alienated and solitary. The carbon copy black and white figures represented in Kirn's work presents the viewer with yuppie-like stereotypes that have come to symbolize contemporary life, their covered eyes highlight their anonymity.
